Mary Anne's Story
Life
I graduated from Columbus High School in 1965. I have many wonderful memories of my times there. I am so excited to be able to keep in touch with friends I met there.
I remember the air raid drills as a result of the Cuban Missile Crisis. I remember thinking that any minute they might attack. I was so scared. I do remember those years as sad times also, as many young men went straight from high school to Vietnam. Do you remember Bill Ross? The most poignant memory was the day that President John Kennedy was assassinated. I remember being in the auditorium in study hall last period. A teacher opened the back door and called out "they've killed the President."
I attended Columbus Junior College. It is now known as Columbus State University. I had a great time there. I went to college full time and worked part time for the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. I met my first true love there.
After graduating I went to Auburn University for my last two years. I majored in Elementary Education. I enjoyed classes (except for chemistry and physics). I dated my husband there and we got married after graduating in 1969.
I began teaching in Georgia, but my husband was drafted into the army and we were sent to Texas. I taught school there until we returned to Columbus. I again got a job in Georgia, but we decided to buy a weekly newspaper in South Alabama. We owned and operated the newspaper until we sold it and two other newspapers in 1986. After we sold the newspapers to a newspaper chain, I went back to school to again be certified as a teacher. I attended Auburn University, and earned a Masters of Education at Livingston University which is now called the University of West Alabama. In the meantime I taught in south Alabama, and Georgia. I then moved to Knoxville, Tennessee where my husband earned his PhD. I attended UT and earned a EDS. in Administration and Supervision at Lincoln Memorial University. I then taught at a Magnet School in Knoxville for 19 years. I have just accepted a promotion to Literacy Coach for Knox County Schools and will be a resource person and instruction coach for teachers.
We have three daughters who are grown. Two are married. One is a special education teacher teaching deaf kindergarten children.. She and her husband have two sons. They live on a farm and raise cattle. One daughter lives in Maryland with her husband. They are both bankers. One daughter lives in Illinois. She has her degree in computer engineering and is also an aspiring comedienne occasionally working at several comedy clubs including Second City, Improv Olympics and Annoyance Theater in Chicago. In fact, right now she is participating in two comedy plays in Chicago.
I am looking forward to Fall and Winter this 2008. My newest grandson has just learned to walk and I really have to have my walking shoes on to keep up with him when he comes to visit. My oldest grandson is now in first grade and loving school. He goes to a little country school that reminds me of Rosemont Elementary in Columbus. Fall leaves are beginning to change in Tennessee. Ya'll come!
Well, the 2008-2009 school year is over. I had a good year figuring out what my new job as Literacy coach would be. Everyone at my new school was very kind. Another birthday came and went and I am still old. This year was a sad year as we lost my mother-in-law, two uncles, two cousins and several friends. I certainly am beginning to feel like an adult now, as I become the older generation.
I am enjoying my new friends and old friends.
Our ongoing conflict in Afghanastan and Iraq certainly do remind me of Vietnam as many of my former students ar...Expand for more
e being sent overseas. Do you ever think about our friends and relatives who served in Vietnam? We seem to be sending our youth off again.
I am teaching summer school this summer in the Knox County Homeless Summer school program. These are wonderful kids. Fast to friendship, self-reliant and eager to learn. We may only have a child two or three days but we remember them forever.

Wow time passes quickly. I am still a literacy coach for Knox County Schools, but I also am scheduled to run a Science Lab at one of our Magnet Schools this fall. I am probably 3 to 5 years from retirement and either job will be fun. I don't get home to Columbus much, but my Mother still lives in our family home. She is 86 yrs. and is still active and drives herself around town. I again worked with the homeless kids in Knoxville this summer. These are such great kids living with their families in our local shelters. They are awesome. I will close for now...more later.

April 2013
Times has passes again. I will retire in June 2013 from Knox County Schools in Knoxville, TN. My plan is to enjoy retirement with my husband and do volunteer work. I now have 3 grandsons. Justin is 5 years old. Jared is 9 years old. Dylan is my newest grandson. He is 1 year old and lives in Frederick, MD. I hope to do a better job of keeping my profile currest.

Well it is 2020 now. So much has happen since I last updated. My Mother passed away last year. Jim's Dad is gone too. So that makes my generation the next to pass on. We are in the middle of the Covid Pandemic. Things have changed tremendously for us. Since I am retired it has not affected my employment but it is so strange to have to practice social distancing. I am especially worried about my daughter, Ashley She has moved to New York and is living in Brooklyn one of the Covid hot spots. She has extreme asthma so she is certainly high risk.
I have four grandchildren now. Jared will be 18 on May 26. He will graduate some time this summer although what graduation will look like with this social distancing is unknown. He will attend UT in the fall in the school of engineering. Justin will be 13 in August. He will be in the 8th grade this fall. His love of science, social studies and Legos keeps him busy. Dylan is 7 and lives in Maryland. He loves ice hockey and science and he is quite a good swimmer. My youngest grandchild is Grace. She is 5 years old. She loves books and ballet. He main desire right now is to keep up with brother Dylan.
I recently viewed a memorial slide show for the Class of 65 website at CHS. I was so shocked to see all our classmates who have passed on. I wonder when I will join them.
2021
It is November 2021. I am still enjoying my retirement. We are renovating our home and adding a sunroom. My Grandson, Jared, is now a sophomore at the University of Tennessee. He loves history, technology, Karate and religious studies. His brother, Justin, is a freshman at South Doyle High School. He loves art, technology and music. He has learned guitar, drums and now piano. Dylan is in the fourth grade. He places ice hockey and he loves to read, build with legos and he is learning piano. My Granddaughter, Grace, is in the first grate. She plays soccer, takes tap dancing, hip hop, crafts and reading. My husband, Jim, is enjoying his retirement also. He is supervising the renovation along with he contractor. He loves outside work, gardening and sports.
My daughters are each doing great. They are all coming home for Thanksgiving and I am so excited to see them. We all got our vaccines so we hope we will be safe.. I will add more later.
